San Luis Obispo Beach and Parks Wedding Information
As a San Luis Obispo Wedding Photographer I'm often asked "where can we be married right on the beach? There are a few select choices to be married on the beach with the sand between your toes. One or two hotels located right on the beach in downtown Pismo Beach offer beach weddings that are quite nice. However, some brides are surprised to see on their wedding day they don't have the complete beach for themselves with people in the distance walking along the coastline. Still, these sites provide easy access to the beach for beautiful portraits of the bride and groom - especially at sunset. If you would like a private beach wedding ceremony and you have a large amount of people then you would need to check with the local government. The small town of Avila Beach is one of the finest places to be actually married on the beach. One site is about 300 yards south of the pier and offers an area that is relatively personal for a public beach. A venue in town can help arrange details along with your reception. Further up the North Coast of San Luis Obispo County are Cayucos and Cambria. Moonstone Beach Drive in Cambria has a large number of small motels across the street from the beach. This area has a nice long wooden boardwalk that lines the small bluffs over the beach. Check with the local venues for beach wedding ceremony options. Nevertheless, a wedding on the bluffs overlooking the ocean can also be quite memorable. Pismo and nearby Shell Beach have beautiful hotels and parks overlooking the ocean from tall bluffs. If you want to have portraits on the beach check with the hotel to see if they have a (usually long) stairway to the beach. It will make access easier to the wet sand instead of driving to a public beach stairway. Margo Dodd Park in Shell Beach is a popular wedding setting. It offers a classic gazebo in a small park on the bluffs. If you'd like photography on the beach, a long stairway to beautiful rock scenes is about one hundred yards away. Adjacent to the gazebo is Dinosaur Caves Park where a large circular terrace on the edge of the bluffs offers expansive views for a large wedding ceremony. A wedding ceremony at a city park over the bluffs with 15 to 150 people can be very affordable. The reception can be held at another nearby site or you could opt to rent a section of the park. Contact the City of Pismo Beach to make reservations. Here are some important considerations for having your wedding at the ocean:
